Carnitine occurs naturally in the form of the Levo- (L-) enantiomer. This compound is extremely safe but only its L- enantiomer should be used.
The D-Carnitine form, present in some of the supplements labelled 'Carnitine' without further details, has side effects. It interferes with the natural form of L-carnitine in relation to intestinal absorption and reversing resorption in the kidneys.
